Kavanaugh, Hugin Wrong for NJ

  • Bob Menendez has consistently opposed the Trump administration’s extreme-right judicial nominees, including Brett Kavanaugh.  He is a leading progressive in the Senate and his record proves it.
  • Menendez opposes extreme, right-wing Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.  Bob Hugin supports him.
  • Brett Kavanaugh was hand-picked by the extreme, right-wing Heritage Foundation, an organization that opposes a women’s right to choose, is against sensible gun safety reform, is anti-marriage equality, anti-labor, and played an integral role in fighting against and holding up federal Sandy disaster relief.  Bob Hugin donated $500,000 to Heritage.
  • A Kavanaugh appointment would erase decades of progress and shift the Supreme Court to the extreme right for generations to come.
  • A Kavanaugh appointment threatens to roll back women’s reproductive, LGBTQ, worker, voting, and civil rights.  It puts corporate interests above the public’s, endangers clean air and clean water environmental protections, jeopardizes the Affordable Care Act and protections for patients with pre-existing conditions, and risks attempts to pass sensible gun safety reform.
  • Brett Kavanaugh does not represent New Jersey values and neither does Bob Hugin.
  • On the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, Brett Kavanaugh consistently ruled in favor of corporate interests over the rights of workers, and polluting industries over public health and environmental protections.
  • Kavanaugh voted to strike down DC’s assault weapons ban and the District’s ability to protect its citizens with commonsense gun safety laws.
  • Kavanaugh is on record supporting a strong Executive Authority that places the President of the United States above the law.
  • Bob Hugin will never stand up to Donald Trump.  He is two for two in support of Trump’s extreme Supreme Court nominees.
  • Bob Menendez opposed Justice Neil Gorsuch’s nomination.  Bob Hugin says he would have supported him.
  • Gorsuch also had Heritage’s blessing.  Gorsuch was the deciding vote in the Janus Case that undermined the ability for teachers, firefighters, nurses, police officers and other public workers to unionize, and in a case allowing a Colorado baker to discriminate against an LGBTQ couple. Gorsuch has also ruled in favor of Ohio’s ability to purge voter rolls and in favor of Trump’s Muslim travel ban.
  • Despite Hugin’s claims that he is “independent,” his support of these deeply conservative nominees should not be a surprise.
    • He donated over $100,000 to Trump’s campaign, including $50,000 after Mike Pence was selected as the VP nominee, who is a notorious anti-LGBTQ politician
    • He was a delegate for Trump at the GOP convention
    • He had an official role on Trump’s transition team that was marked by incompetence and controversy

MENENDEZ RECORD ON CONSERVATIVE JUDICIAL NOMINEES

  • Menendez says that he will oppose Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
  • Menendez has consistently voted against President Trump’s unqualified and extremist lower court nominees.
  • Menendez voted against the nominations of Gorsuch and Alito. He voted in favor of Justices Kagan and Sotomayor.
  • Menendez fought against the Mitch McConnell’s choice to invoke the “nuclear option” and change the rules for voting Supreme Court justices.
  • Clearly, Menendez is standing up for equality and the safety of all Americans, not just the most privileged. That is why he has a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign, and has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, the Brady campaign, NJEA, and other groups that represent NJ values.
