Gov. Phil Murphy contrasted the reorganization with “the fiasco in Washington” before swearing in the officials.
Earlier that day Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy failed to secure the speakership, leaving the House of Representatives without a leader. The representative has failed to secure enough votes for speaker as of Wednesday.
“I saw the contrast between what’s going on down there and how you all do it so right up here,” Murphy said.
“Union County is the heartbeat, in so many respects of the state,” the governor said. “It’s an incredibly diverse county, it is a county of great strength, and it’s a county where I think the New Jersey values jump out almost more than any other place in the state, prioritizing education, healthcare, environmental justice and criminal justice reform.”
Senate President Nicholas Scutari of Linden, who chairs the Union County Democratic Committee, remarked on the party’s long record of county leadership.
“This is my 25th year standing at this podium straight,” Scutari said. “The Democrats have won 25 years in a row. All of that is done as a result of this tremendous teamwork we have here in the county.”
